Australian Masterpieces in Silver
Beginning in 1988, the Masterpieces in Silver series was produced until 2011 in Canberra. This long running coin series is dedicated to Australian events, themes and famous persons that have helped to shape Australia as a nation. The Masterpieces series came in many forms, often with silver plaques and varying numbers of coins. The coins were always produced as proof grade and ship in presentation boxes - normally black and silver.
The 1995 Masterpieces in Silver Colonial Australia set, highlights key figures and milestones in Australian colonial history. Designed and sculpted by Wojciech Pietranik, chief sculptor and designer at the Royal Australian Mint at that time. He is well-known for creating all five unique historical motifs in this specific collection (as well as designing the Sydney 2000 Olympic medals). You can find his initials, WP, struck directly onto the reverse faces of the coins.
- Elizabeth Macarthur: Honors her foundational role in establishing the Australian wool export industry, depicting her portrait alongside a flock of nine Merino sheep.
- Colonel William Light: Commemorates the layout and mapping of Adelaide, showcasing his profile paired with historical theodolite mapping equipment.
- The Gold Rush: Celebrates the 1850s economic and immigration boom, illustrating colonial miners actively digging and panning for gold.
- Cobb & Co: Pays tribute to early inland transport networks, featuring a swift, passenger-laden horse-drawn mail coach.
- Charles Todd: Remembers the engineering feat of the Overland Telegraph Line, displaying his profile alongside workers erecting outback telegraph poles.
