1993 Masterpieces in Silver - The Explorers (Part 1) Silver Proof 5 Coin Set
Australian Masterpieces in Silver
Beginning in 1988, the Masterpieces in Silver series was produced until 2011 in Canberra. This long running coin series is dedicated to Australian events, themes and famous persons that have helped to shape Australia as a nation. The Masterpieces series came in many forms, often with silver plaques and varying numbers of coins. The coins were always produced as proof grade and ship in presentation boxes - normally black and silver.
The 1993 Masterpieces in Silver set, The Explorers (Part 1), honors Australia's first peoples and early European navigators and land explorers. All five explorer-themed reverse sides were designed by the prolific Royal Australian Mint sculptor and coin designer Vladimir Gottwald. His initials ("VG") can be found subtly inscribed on the reverse faces of the coins.
- The Aboriginal Peoples: Dedicated to the First Explorers, acknowledging Australia's Indigenous peoples who navigated and lived across the land for tens of thousands of years before European arrival.
- Abel Tasman: Honors the Dutch navigator who, in 1642, became the first known European to reach Tasmania (which he named Van Diemen's Land) and New Zealand.
- James Cook: Commemorates the British captain who charted the eastern coast of Australia in 1770 aboard the HMS Endeavour, claiming it for Great Britain.
- Matthew Flinders: Celebrates the English navigator who, between 1801 and 1803, led the first successful circumnavigation of the Australian continent and heavily promoted the name "Australia".
- Blaxland, Wentworth, and Lawson: Remembers Gregory Blaxland, William Wentworth, and William Lawson, the three explorers who successfully found a route across the formidable Blue Mountains in 1813, opening up the interior of New South Wales for settlement.
