2018 $1 65th Anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II
On 6 February 1952, Princess Elizabeth acceded to the British throne, following the death of her father, King George VI. Sixty-five years ago, on 2 June 1953, the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II took place at Westminster Abbey, the setting for coronations since 1066. It was a formal yet spectacular ceremony, lasting almost three hours and conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. More than 8,000 guests attended, with 129 nations and territories officially represented.
As well as the Royal Family, the procession to the abbey was made up of church leaders, Commonwealth prime ministers, members of the royal household, civil and military leaders and the Yeoman of the Guard. Huge crowds lined the streets of London to view the passing parade, despite heavy rain.
For the first time, and at the request of the Queen, the Coronation service was televised. It comprised the recognition, the oath, the anointing, the investiture, the enthronement and the homage. During the investiture, the St Edward's Crown, made of solid gold and weighing just over two kilograms (four pounds and 12 ounces), was placed on the head of the Queen. The procession back to Buckingham Palace included just under 30,000 members of British and Commonwealth military forces.
