1994 Birds of Australia $10 Piedfort - Wedge Tail Eagle
The 1994 Birds of Australia $10 Wedge-Tailed Eagle Piedfort Silver Proof Coin is a highly collectible decimal release struck by the Royal Australian Mint. It serves as the sixth and final installment of the iconic Birds of Australia commemorative series (1989–1994).
Because it is a Piedfort strike, the planchet is engineered at double the thickness of a standard proof coin. This gives it twice the weight while maintaining an identical face diameter. The series commenced in 1989 with the Laughing Kookaburra, followed by the Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo, Jabiru (Black-Necked Stork), Emperor Penguin and Palm Cockatoo before the Wedge-Tailed Eagle.
- Denomination: $10 AUD
- Composition: Sterling Silver (92.5% Silver, 7.5% Copper)
- Weight: 40.00 grams (Contains ~1.19 troy ounces of pure silver)
- Diameter: 34.00 mm
- Thickness: 5.1 mm
- Edge: Milled / Reeded
- Official Mintage: Limited to 14,134 pieces
Note: A piedfort coin is an unusually thick, heavy coin that shares the same diameter and design as a standard circulating coin, but is typically twice as thick and weighs twice as much. The term comes from the French words pied (foot) and fort (strong or heavy) so it literally translates to "heavy foot," which historically evolved into an idiomatic expression for a "heavy weight" or "heavy measure". It is pronounced pee-ay-fore.
