Eureka @ Petersham Stamp & Coin Show
Eureka was pleased to be part of the recent Petersham Stamp & Coin Fair on Sunday 30th of August. It was a busy day from start to finish, collectors visited from all across Australia. One of the highlights for the Eureka team was meeting such a broad mix of people who share an interest in coins and collecting!
Our Eureka $2 coin pack proved particularly popular, but there was one clear winner: The 1966 Round 50c! It’s easy to see why this iconic Australian coin remains a favourite even sixty years after, read more about this coin in the spotlight below!

The Round 1966 50c holds a unique place in Australian history as the country's only circulating decimal coin made of silver!
On the 14th Feb 1966, Australia replaced their British style pounds, shillings, and pence with the decimal system of dollars and cents. The round 50c was introduced as the highest denomination decimal coin. The coins were struck by The Royal Australian Mint (RAM), which had just opened a year prior. In 1965, the market price of silver was effectively capped and traded at an annual average of US$1.29 per troy ounce! Unfortunatelly Minted with 80% silver, the 50c fell victim to its own high metal content when global silver prices skyrocketed causing the intrinsic melt value of the coin to exceed its face value. The public quickly began hoarding the pieces, prompting the RAM to halt production in 1967, after striking 36.5 million coins. To solve the hoarding crisis and prevent confusion with the round 20c coin, the Australian government replaced it in 1969 with the dodecagonal or 12-sided, copper-nickel version used today.
