Gallipoli 1915 - 90th anniversary of the ANZAC landing
The 2005 Fine Silver $1 Proof Coin – Gallipoli 1915 commemorates the 90th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli during World War I. The reverse design depicts a silhouette of an Australian bugler playing the Last Post, designed by Vladimir Gottwald.
The ANZAC landing at Gallipoli took place on 25 April 1915, when Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) troops landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in present-day Türkiye as part of an Allied campaign during World War I. The objective was to capture the Dardanelles Strait and open a supply route to Russia.
Facing fierce resistance and difficult terrain, the campaign became a prolonged and costly stalemate. After eight months of fighting, the Allied forces withdrew in December 1915 and January 1916. More than 8,700 Australians and 2,700 New Zealanders lost their lives during the campaign. The courage, endurance, and mateship displayed by the ANZAC troops helped shape the national identities of both Australia and New Zealand and is commemorated each year on ANZAC Day.
