150th Anniversary of the Eureka Stockade Silver Proof
This $1 Silver Proof coin series commemorates the 2004 150th Anniversary of the Eureka Stocakde which took place on 3rd December 1854 in Ballarat, Victoria when gold miners' uprose in Ballarat, Victoria against unfair licence fees. The Eureka Stockade is one of the most defining events in Australian history, often cited as the birthplace of Australian democracy.
Frustrated by expensive mining licences, heavy-handed policing, and a lack of political representation, gold miners (known as diggers) built a timber stockade and rallied under the now-famous Eureka Flag in protest. Government troops stormed the stockade in a brief but violent battle, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 miners and several soldiers. Although the rebellion was quickly suppressed, public support for the miners led to significant reforms, including changes to the mining licence system and greater democratic representation. Today, the Eureka Stockade is widely regarded as a defining moment in Australia's democratic history, symbolising the fight for fairness, justice, and political rights.
The coin is made from 99.9% pure Silver and comes in a presentation case with a certificate of authenticity.
