Issued by the Royal Australian Mint in 1995, the $10 Endangered Species Piedfort Coin featuring the Numbat is a sterling silver proof coin with a double-thickness planchet. It weighs 40 grams, has a diameter of 34.1 mm, a thickness of 5.1 mm, and a mintage of 14,000.
The Numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus): Featured on this inaugural 1995 release, the numbat is a small, diurnal marsupial famously known for its striking white-and-black striped rump and a diet consisting entirely of termites. The reverse design of the numbat on a hollow log subtly references its natural habitat and shelter. The inclusion of this imagery addresses the primary causes of its population collapse: extensive land clearing and introduced predators like foxes and feral cats

The term comes from the French words pied (foot) and fort (strong or heavy) so it literally translates to "heavy foot," which historically evolved into an idiomatic expression for a "heavy weight" or "heavy measure". It is pronounced pee-ay-fore.
