The 1988 $10 Bicentennial banknote was the world's first circulating polymer banknote, issued by the Reserve Bank of Australia to celebrate Australia's Bicentenary. To mark this event, 800,000 uncirculated notes featuring the "AA" serial prefix were packaged into blue commemorative display folders and enclosed in a white paper envelope for public distribution.
The 1988 $10 Bicentennial banknote holds a monumental place in global numismatic history as the world's first circulating polymer banknote. Released by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) on 27 January 1988, it fundamentally changed how the world prints money. After massive paper $10 forgeries appeared in 1966, the RBA tasked the CSIRO to create an un-counterfeitable banknote. It took 22 years and $20 million to develop the plastic material (BOPP) and the clear holographic window featuring Captain James Cook.
One side focuses on Indigenous heritage, showing an Aboriginal youth, ancient rock art, and a Morning Star pole. the other side focuses on European settlement, depicting the HMS Supply at Sydney Cove and early settlers.
Despite initial public complaints that the notes felt strange and the ink could scratch off, the experiment was a massive success.It paved the way for Australia to completely phase out paper money by 1996 and inspired dozens of countries (like the UK and Canada) to switch to plastic currency.
