The Birds of Australia series is a celebrated six-coin collection issued by the Royal Australian Mint between 1989 and 1994. The central theme of this numismatic release is the celebration of Australia's rich avian diversity, highlighting the unique and iconic native bird species found across the continent. Each annual release features a distinct native bird on the reverse side, pairing a frosted proof finish with a standard $10 AUD legal tender denomination.
The Laughing Kookaburra was the first in the series, capturing a pair of Australia's famous "bushman's clock" perched on a eucalyptus branch, was designed by Horst Hahne, the Royal Australian Mint's Chief Engraver at the time.
