1988 1oz Silver & 1/4oz Silver - The Holey Dollar & The Dump - 2 Coin Set
The 1988 Holey Dollar ($1 99.9% pure silver 1oz) and Dump (25c 99.9% pure silver 1/4oz) coins are housed in a special presentation wallet which features a portrait of Governor Lachlan Macquarie on the left and traditional Indigenous artwork on the right. It reads: "The Holey Dollar & The Dump - Australia's New Solid Silver Legal Tender Coins - A Commemorative Issue - 1988."
The pair were the first in a three year series of proof Holey Dollar and Dump coins issued by the Perth Mint between 1988 and 1990. This 1988 release commemorates the 175th Anniversary of the original Holey Dollar.
HISTORY: Australia's first official currency, the Holey Dollar, was created in 1813 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie to solve a severe coin shortage in the colony of New South Wales. To prevent British and Spanish silver coins from leaving the colony on merchant ships, Macquarie imported 40,000 Spanish silver eight-real coins, cut a hole out of the center of each, and counter-stamped them with their new local values. The outer ring became the Holey Dollar worth five shillings, while the punched-out center became the "Dump" worth fifteen pence.
1oz Holey Dollar Features the Maklouf portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and Yulunggul (the Rainbow Serpent) on the reverse, adapted from Arnhem Land art. 1/4oz Dump Depicts the Wawalag Sisters on the reverse alongside purity markings and the 1988 year-date.
This 1988 release pairs with the 1989 (Freshwater Crocodiles/Wandjina) and 1990 (Barramundi/Mimi Spirits) issues to complete the 3-year set.
